Robert J. Hargrave

Robert James Hargrave was born April 27, 1917 in Ana, Illinois to Ethel and Edwin Hargrave. He was the third of seven children (Jack, Gene, Bobby, Bessie, Leigh, Donald and Aleta Joy.) He was ordained to ministry of the Christian Church at Dixon Springs Christian Service Camp on August 6, 1939. He graduated from Johnson Bible College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Religion in 1942 and began a ministry in Hutsonville, Illinois. He attended Chaplain School at Harvard University in 1944 and joined the U.S. Army where he served in W.W II as a Chaplain in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe where he ministered to and counseled with soldiers of many faiths. He was honorably discharged from the Army in April of 1946. He Graduated with an MA in Religion from Lincoln Christian Seminary in 1947. Robert married Mary Martha Horning of Hutsonville, Illinois, December 22, 1946. She was born January 21, 1919, the daughter of Osceola and Verna Horning. She was a graduate of the University of Illinois in 1940. She was a teacher at Hustonville High School from 1944 -1949. She was the pianist at the church. Bob and Mary Martha had their own radio show. They composed over 30 songs. Robert Lance Buchanan was born January 30,1944 and adopted in 1948. James Michael was born July 20, 1949 at Terre Haute, Indiana. Bob’s ministry with the Hutsonville Church concluded in 1951 when he was called to plant a church in Defiance, Ohio. Robert preached and Mary Martha played the organ, piano and directed the choir. The church grew to over 300 until 1965. They helped start a new church in Archbold, Ohio. Robert enjoyed singing in a trio with his good friends Brian Maxey and Mike Grange. Bob and Mary Martha were called to start a new church in Cape Coral, Florida. In two years the church grew to over 100. They were called by Great Lakes Bible College in Lansing, Michigan in 1967. Robert was the Professor in New Testament Studies and Mary Martha was a Professor of music. They started a new church in North Lansing, Michigan. Both “retired” from GLBC in 1982 to preach at the Chiefland, Florida, Christian Church. They then started the Crystal River Christian Church. After building a beautiful worship center with the encouragement and support of family and friends, they retired again. Bob authored a book “Revelation, God’s Final Word”. They moved to the Sunshine State Home in Holiday, Florida. They helped start a church there. Mary Martha passed away, February 23, 1996. Bob helped start a new church in Holiday. They built a beautiful worship center. He was a member of the American Legion. Robert moved to Seminole, Florida to live with Mike and Deb in 2005. He moved to the Heron House in 2007 where he was transferred into heaven on November 25, 2011. He was instrumental in bringing hundreds of people to the Lord and baptizing them. His service will be preached by his grandson, Shane. Robert will be buried next to his beloved wife, Mary Martha, in the Hutsonville, Illinois, Cemetery Saturday, December 3, 2011. He is survived by his sister, Aleta Joy; Robert Lance and Linda Hargrave and their sons Rob and Scot and grandchildren; Mike and Deb Hargrave and sons Shane and Brad and grandchildren; nephews, nieces, precious sister-in-laws and thousands of friends who will eat ice cream with him again in heaven. In lieu of flowers donations or memorials may be made to: • Great Lakes Christian College in Lansing, Michigan • Lake James Christian Assembly in Angola, Indiana • Suncoast Hospice of Florida

There will be a Memorial Service at Friendship Community Church in Treasure Island December 10, 2011 at 2:00 PM
